@alexandra1095 years ago For backups, I think you need to be really honest with yourself on how much you use. For example, on Black Friday, I purchased Cinema Secrets brush cleaner. I’ve used it for years (and they keep raising the price). It was about 40% off for the sale, so I did stock up on enough to last me for 2020. But I agree that too often we buy what we love now and then they go to waste. So be honest with yourself before buying that backup. ... 39

@tabsamnic5 years ago The only thing I have ever bought back ups of is my moisturizer and mascara. Moisturizer was half off in Ulta's 21 days of beauty and since I have sensitive skin, I just stick with the one I know works. 32

@valeriekingsbury33945 years ago The idea of Afterpay for makeup really annoys me. There is no makeup item that I NEED that bad if I don’t have the money all up front for it. Payment plans are great for larger purchases but not makeup. 64
  • @
@SamanthaMarchxo5 years ago I remember when I first was learning about Beautylish so many comments would tell me to use their payment plan and that made me so uncomfortable! I still haven't done that or Afterpay and I hope to keep it that way lol! 14

@angelapennington47245 years ago I've gotten myself into trouble with Afterpay. So many tiny payments really add up. 24

@becm9635 years ago Another great thing about waiting on new releases is they often go on sale later. Abh ran a sale and I picked up the new Jackie Aina palette. 8

@soooofiaa5 years ago You converted me into a mini makeup lover.... I never go through makeup except mascara. The full size is never worth it for me! 12

@melissaquach12865 years ago Great advice. I've recently got into makeup and I love to buy new palettes and just this year, my collection grew rapidly.
I feel like I have to calm down and make carefully planned purchases!
I've only had 3 quite cheap palettes in my collection for the past years, an elf one, a coastal scents and one NYX.
This year, however, my collection grew to 19 palettes suddenly... (Colourpop being a big part of it tbh)

@suesue2425 years ago I do agree on not buying bck up.. I hit pan on one of my contour pellet color & I bought an single couture color of that pellet. To find out till this day I haven’t even touch the bck single contour. It’s been 2 yrs now. I’m sure it’s expired....lesson learned. ... 5

@AutsiticAlien0075 years ago Using the services like afterpay can affect you if you want to get a loan.
That shows the bankers you may be spending above your means and makes it more likely to be rejected for a loan. This can be anything from buying a car to even a house.
Plus because of how much debt people are getting into, you are required to have the first payment up front with a majority of the shops.
So technically they are lying when they say pay later.
To me it’s only good for when you need something and can’t buy it or you have a big order that needs to be done. I only use it when I have a big order I need to get and even then I have to have a major discount to minimise what I buy and how much I spend. I use it as little as possible and save instead.
Backups for me is skincare and maybe mascara. I am a creature of habit and I have learnt I like one thing and stick to it.
With me I have been trying to find a skin care regime that works and if I like a product I buy it again and again.

@formersusan5 years ago The afterpay thing is just infuriating because it targets low-income people who struggle as it is. 45
  • @
@TH0KH5 years ago The only thing I’d want a full size of these days is skincare, lip balm sticks and base products (setting powder, concealer, foundation). Lipstick, blush, bronzer, highlight, eyeshadow etc take foreverrrrrr 4

@megansimplystitch5 years ago I agree with you on backups & minis. Minis are better, imo, because I can actually use them up before the 3 month limit when the must be tossed out.
As a casual consumer & makeup enthusiast, I've come to realize that I don't actually need backups for eyeshadow palettes, blushes, bronzers, highlighters or setting powders. I just don't use them up fast enough to justify the purchase.
I did buy backups on my 3 favorite liquid lipsticks & setting spray. After I used up the lippies, I bought replacements on sale. Just one each, tho. A big improvement on 2018's bad habits.
I've been thru 2 of the TF Dew You setting sprays this year. I love the light mist & gentle glow that I get from this particular product. I picked up just ONE more, on sale, as a backup. Right now, I have 1.5 bottles in my collection.
I'm kinda proud of myself for not "stocking up" on them. It's a bad habit from 2018 that I've been working on breaking this year. I want to do even better in 2020.

@kathchang5 years ago 🥰😍❤ yes! excited to see more looks with the born to run palette! I caved and got it during the sephora sale, but am a bit intimidated by all the colors! 4

@AlexandriaSutton5 years ago I totally agree about afterpay and credit in regards to non necessities like makeup!! 2
  • @
@k.huelle5 years ago I couldn't agree more with you about understanding ingredients because it can be tricky to discern marketing hype from reality and knowing exactly what you are paying for!

@AnastaciaInCleveland5 years ago I've started a makeup savings account. I set aside a little money every month so that if I see something I like I can either buy it or save for it depending on the price. So, theoretically, if I want something pricey like a Natasha Denona palette, I can buy it, but that means I won't have money for other things. (As if I would ever do that! 😂) It will also help me keep track of my purchases and still allow me to use my Ulta MasterCard to earn points (which I have to pay off in full each time that I use it). I don't include consumables like mascara, brow products, and micellar water in this plan. This, coupled with what I learned during my failed no-buy year should help me to keep my makeup purchases in check. The plan is therapist approved, too!
I'm looking forward to your video on your Born To Run eyelook. It's so pretty! 😍 ~Anastacia in Cleveland

@kendspan2125 years ago I’m SO excited for the 3 looks one palette. I got the palette with my Ulta points earlier in the year and was initially disappointed. I almost de-cluttered it! However; I’ve been loving it so much lately. It’s one of my favorites! ...

@Butterfly_Laura5 years ago I love all of these tips! I like to try to take my time and see if a product is still on my mind a while after it's release... then if it is I know that it is something I really want. I also like to do something else I've seen you do a lot and go into my collection and see if I already have similar shades to what I'm wanting to buy before I run out and get something... that way I'm not buying too much of the same thing. ... 2

@tracyfrederick56065 years ago I keep backups of mascara and concealer. . I bought 3 it cosmetics Superhero mascara that I love on sale. I'm very loyal to my mascara. Concealer is something I go through a lot of. When it's half way used up. I only use two, Both drugstore. I use Elf Camo concealer as an eyeshadow base.
I try to get blush minis ( Tarte especially ) . I love Tarte Base tape primer. The mini is huge ! It'll last me months. I also buy minis of my eye cream when I can !

@LeelyLion5 years ago I usually only buy backups for mascara, eyebrow pencils, and eyebrow gel. I usually forget if I’m out of them, so I make sure to have a backup on hand 😂 also, I loooove minis! Mini Too Faced & IT Cosmetics mascaras, mini Becca highlights, etc. Such a good reminder! ...

@kayleyakakaylchips80095 years ago some of my favorite money-savings tips:
    - you can block any online shop (, , etc.) from being able to be accessed on your iPhone in the settings (I'm sure you can also do this for your laptop)
    - Target (and I'm sure other stores have it as well) has a drive-up or pickup in-store feature. Put stuff in the cart online, they'll gather the items in-store for you, and they drop it off at your car or you pick up at the register. This helps avoid wandering around the makeup or clothing aisles and buying stuff you don't need.
    - Buy used!! Depending on the makeup item of course, but you can find used or sometimes new at discounted prices on Poshmark, Mercari, etc. Just buy rubbing alocohol and spray bottle so you can disinfect the makeup yourself. I promise it's really not that bad.

@beckybertish78415 years ago It's always good to look at ingredients. 1

@erinlikesacornishpasty47035 years ago I have definitely gotten backups of the foundation and powder I use, but that's because I've settled on the one's I actually use and love. The other products I don't do that with.
Minis make a lot of sense. You're right about how hard it is to use up full size products. The only thing that limits me is that I don't do a lot of online shopping so that's harder. Most minis are actually sold online now 😥.

@anaburton88225 years ago I only buy back ups for my beauty blender and brow wiz when it's on sale. I know I will always use these two products.

@birdkisssi25 years ago I stock up some skincare, brow pencils and mascara/primer but color make up wise, I only bought twice or three times a year during sale. I'll always put it in wish list and wait to see if I still want have that item after a month of two. If it do, I'll purchase it at next sale moment. There are so many sales throughout the year nowadays that I genuinely do not buy anything make up related anymore outside the sale period. ...

@breklynbartels47605 years ago I am going to take a page out of Whitney Hedrick no buy. But definitely use your tips from your video of the year of your shop my stash video.
Can you give a tutorial on the Born to Run palette. I have that but I am new to eyeshadow and have NO idea what I'm doing. Haha.
I recently used afterpay for the first time and I hate it. It is so stressful to have that money in your account when emergencies happen before the next payment. No more for that.

@drsallymanderchoi5 years ago I really need to start buying minis. I bought a full size of the milk makeup bronzer b/c it was like 4x the value per ounce but I'll never use it up, I should have saved the coin and gotten the mini, which I also may have never used up ... 2

@carab10365 years ago I appreciate tips that I can use. Lots of people talk about no-buys but if I am honest with myself, I won't do that. However I have really embraced minis this year and the wait and think mentality on new releases.

@bazel7tt7195 years ago I have to do a better job with not buying. I am going to do a no buy with the exception of my couple subscription boxes. I get them for the skincare. I have a chart set up for my skincare already to start going through. I will be starting that in January! ...

@jolanda.c5 years ago I like Afterpay, Klarna and stuff like that because I pay after I get it. No delivery no money. I always pay the whole amount at once after the delivered products are fine.
Backups I just stock up everything of skincare, foundation and that stuff that need a replacement in 6 months. I want to be on a no-buy and when my basics are forfilled I don't have to go to the stores for mineral water and end up with a lipstick...

@cammielynnable5 years ago I personally like the idea of afterpay. I don’t think I’ll go over board with it ever cause I’m not really that person. But every once and a while there’s something I might need in my collection that I can’t afford or something I wanna try. Also they don’t charge interest and they have you pay every 2 weeks for 4 payments or you can just pay off the balance when you can ... 1

@tamarasparks80655 years ago I buy bu of mascara, brow products and primers. I made the mistake of doing a foundation bu and then found another I liked more. I used afterpay for my Clarisonic but won't do it for makeup. It is too tempting to go overboard. I love minis! I made myself wait for sales on everything this year. ...

@AwakingOceanborn5 years ago After pay freaks me out. I’m oblivious enough to not remember I’ll get X amount charged to my account monthly and panic because “someone else is using my card” nope nope. I think this year I’ll do replacements only and I’ll give myself a free pass for Lisa Eldridge’s lipstick releases and re-stocks, which I think happen twice a year, so that’ll be cool. ...
