Sunday Fresh Markets, the popular weekend arm of Rocklea's Brisbane markets, are not just a goldmine for bargain fruit & veges but for also larder stocking and brunch. Situated across the road from the parent Brisbane Markets, they can be found huddled within a cluster of purpose built open-sided souk-style stalls. (Where on Sundays they are replaced with the second-hand treasure hunter's Sunday Discovery Market). Despite the basic get-up there’s nothing basic about the Saturday Fresh Market. The range of fruit & veges is vast and comprehensive – alongside the standards can be found dragon fruit, whole jackfruit and fresh whole beetroot, chestnuts, lobok, pak choy, rhubarb, fresh figs and plump raisins. A small German smokehouse sells gypsy ham, Kessler, German style bacon, smoked speck, cheese Kransky and Debreceni (Hungarian spiced sausage) while at the fish stalls mud crabs and fresh salmon abound at around half retail price. Fresh cooked popcorn, French bon bons and macarons, Vietnamese baguettes, fresh pasta, wines, tapenades, jams such as guava jelly and mango butter, fresh herbs of all persuasions and specialty breads such as Turkish pides and pumpkin cob are but some of the other offerings. Even dogs are well catered for with loose gourmet treats of ostrich tendons, kangaroo jerky, cow hooves and pork rope, although they are not allowed in the market grounds. If visiting to shop, make time for a cheap breakfast or brunch from the bustling multicultural ‘food hall’, with a divine coffee from boutique fair-trade outfit Black Sheep. Nab a seat at the plastic tables and choose from fresh fruit and Greek yoghurts such as lemon myrtle and honey walnut, German sausages from the little Wursthaus, jaffles, Dutch Poffertjes (mini pancakes), or a delicious Transylvanian pancake (cheese & herb or mushroom & bacon) or star donut from the Langos Hungarian hut. You can choose to pay for parking combined with your entry fee within the Market site (including entry for the driver and all passengers in the car), by turning into Martin Taylor Drive off Sherwood Road or driving another 300m towards Oxley Road and turning left into our new car park development. Or, you can pay a small entry fee at the Brisbane MarketPlace pedestrian entry on the corner of Sherwood Rd and Martin Taylor Drive.
