Italy: New infectious disease hospital opens in Milan as city preps for future pandemics

Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe A new infectious disease hospital opened it's doors in the Milan suburb of Rozzano on Friday as the region seeks to use the experiences of the COVID-19 outbreak to prepare for future pandemics or a potential second wave of coronavirus. The Archbishop of Milan Mario Delpini joined local officials at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The health institution, built thanks to a multimillion euro donation raised by the Humanitas Foundation charity, is equipped with the newest medical equipment and was designed from the outset to ensure that patients with infectious diseases can be isolated safely. The hospital occupies 2,700 square metres (8,858 square feet), and has "completely autonomous spaces with a fully autonomous organisation," said the head of the hospital's primary care unit, Dr Antonio Voza, before explaining that such facilities are crucial in the fight against diseases like the coronavirus. Lombardy had one of the first COVID clusters in Europe and became one of Italy's worst-hit regions with health institutions proving ill-prepared for a massive wave of infectious disease.
