Lipolysis: Fatty acid oxidation: Part 2: Hormone-sensitive lipase. In this video, I have explained the first stage in the utilization of fatty acids as a major fuel. Usually, fatty acids are stored in our adipose tissue as triacylglycerols or triglycerides and whenever required these triglycerides undergo hydrolysis and mobilized to tissues for further breakdown and finally give energy in the form of ATP inside the mitochondrial matrix. Lipolysis means breakdown or hydrolysis of triacylglycerols or triglycerides by an enzyme called hormone-sensitive lipase. The activity of hormone sensitive lipase can be affected by hormones like insulin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, glucagon and ACTH. Here Insulin is the inhibitory hormone for this lipase.
