In this video, I interview a U.S. university student that works as a server or waitress during her summer vacation. We discuss the average percent that people leave as a tip at restaurants in the United States. We also discuss the reasons why people leave a bad tip to a server. Some of these reasons include forgetting about orders and failing to visit a customer's table to check in on them. Another topic we discussed was how the hourly wage is so different between the states of New York and Massachusetts. Although these two states are located quite close to one another, waiters or waitresses receive a much higher hourly wage working in New York than they do in Massachusetts. One more subject we talked about was how servers are supposed to share their tips with both the busboys and kitchen staff. This percentage can vary between restaurants, so there is no set way to determine how much to share. This tipping out done by servers is different for each restaurant. In the case of Michelle, the young woman in this lesson, she typically earns about 10% of her tip money after tipping out. The key points in this English lesson regarding tipping in U.S. restaurants are that most customers will leave a tip between 15~20%. For bad service, customers will only leave a tip between 8~10%. However, if a customer does leave a bad tip, quite often that customer will write feedback to the server which explains the reason they left a bad tip. As a result, working as a waiter or waitress in the United States seems to be based on merit pay. If you like this video, please click the like button and share it. Don't forget to leave a comment!
